The new IDC curriculum consists of two parts the Assistant Instructor (AI) Course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor program (OWSI). Combining the four-day Assistant Instructor Course and the five-day OWSI program into a continuous program with a days rest in between makes up our 10 day IDC program.
Successfully completing the AI course earns you the Assistant Instructor rating and allows you to work as Instructional assistant and independently conduct certain PADI Programs. AI course completion also qualifies you to participate in the OWSI program.
During the AI and OWSI programs it is important to understand that the staff will concentrate on your skill and knowledge development, not testing. The resort setting that we work in provides a low-stress environment that allows you to relax, which makes the learning easier. During the programs our team of highly experienced staff will be on hand to offer you all the support that you need.
Successfully completing the OWSI program (or an entire IDC) makes you eligible to participate in the PADI Instructor Examination (IE).
The IE is an evaluative program that tests your teaching ability, dive knowledge, skill level, and understanding of the PADI system, attitude and professionalism. Instructor Candidates become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors only after successfully completing an IE.
Koh Samui is a busy island with most of life's necessities being available from local shops and stores. For those attending an IDC in the cooler winter months some warm clothing is needed for the Open Water and pool training sessions. The Temperature in the Gulf Of Thailand ranges very little over the year, with a summer high (April / May)of 32 degrees centigrade and a winter low ( Nov / December ) of 26 Degrees. However, in winter the temperature in the swimming pools can drop as low as 25 degrees and this may affect your choice of wetsuit to bring. With regard to equipment, if you are unsure what is the most suitable the best advice is to bring everything. A full set of diving equipment is required to attend an IDC and if needed can be purchased from our Retail Center. All our IDC candidates are entitled to 20% discount on Retail equipment and 50% on some special promotions. We stock the full range of the latest quality equipment and can supply all of your needs from a simple snorkel to a full set of gear. We hold the Mares dealership for the whole of Thailand and also stock, Tusa, Technisub, Aquasphere and Coltrisub equipment.
Your ultimate success during the IDC program depends greatly on the amount of preparation you put in prior to the program.
You should begin your self-study well in advance of your IDC and complete the following steps:
Review the Diving Knowledge Workbook
Complete all available Divemaster exams (Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Skills and Environment and RDP)
Use the Encyclopedia of Diving as a Reference. This is knowledge that you should already have. If you prepare this in advance, it will give you more time during the IDC to focus on the teaching aspect.

Practice rescue skills focusing on the unconscious diver at the surface (exercise #7) in the Rescue Diver Course.
Prior to the start of the AI / IDC candidates must complete all course knowledge reviews (16) in the Instructor Candidate Workbook. Workbook. This book is included in the price of the IDC. If you buy one from your local dive center to have more time to prepare, we will reimburse the cost of the workbook according with the PADI's current price list. Answering these knowledge reviews in advance will help you to relax a little more during the IDC, and allow you more time to prepare for your teaching presentations.
